Digital License vs Product Key in Windows
Windows 10 and 11 support two activation models: classic 25-character product keys and modern digital licenses (formerly 'digital entitlement'). They behave very differently — knowing which one you have decides how you reinstall or transfer Windows.
Product key (classic)
- 25-character XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX format.
- Tied to the key itself — must be re-entered on each install.
- Issued for retail (FPP) and OEM installs prior to Windows 8.
- Stored in BIOS for OEM PCs; printed on stickers for retail boxes.
Digital license
- No human-readable key — a digital ticket tied to your hardware ID.
- Stored on Microsoft's activation servers, keyed to your motherboard.
- Issued automatically after a Windows 7/8 → 10/11 upgrade.
- Also issued via the HWID method using KMSAuto.software.
Which one do you have?
- Settings → System → Activation. If you see 'Windows is activated with a digital license', you have one.
- If you see 'Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account', it's a digital license tied to your MSA (best — survives motherboard changes).
- If you see a 25-character key but no 'digital license' text, you have a classic key.
Which is better?
- Digital license wins for reinstalls — Windows reactivates automatically on the same hardware.
- Digital license linked to MSA wins for hardware changes — call Microsoft to transfer to a new motherboard.
- Product keys are only better if you want a fixed string you can write down.
Frequently asked questions
▸Does HWID give me a real digital license?
Yes. HWID generates a digital ticket from your hardware and gets a permanent entitlement from Microsoft, identical in format to one issued during a genuine free upgrade.
▸Can a product key be converted to a digital license?
Yes — after activating with a product key on Windows 10/11, the entitlement is automatically converted to a digital license tied to the hardware.
▸Will my digital license survive a motherboard swap?
Only if it's linked to your Microsoft account. Otherwise, hardware changes invalidate the license and you need to call Microsoft's activation hotline.
▸Can I see my product key on a digitally licensed PC?
wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey shows the OEM key burned into BIOS. There's no key to extract for retail digital licenses.
▸Why doesn't Microsoft show me my digital license key?
Because there isn't one — the entitlement is a server-side record, not a 25-character string. There's nothing to display.
▸Does Office use digital licenses?
No, Office uses its own AAA licensing system (managed by ospp.vbs). Ohook installs a perpetual AAA license analogous to Windows' digital license.
