'Windows Is Not Activated' Watermark
The 'Activate Windows' watermark in the bottom-right corner appears when Windows enters the unlicensed notification state. The permanent fix is to install a valid digital license — temporary registry hacks only hide the watermark and disable wallpaper personalization. Use HWID for a real fix.
Recommended: Permanent fix with HWID
- Download KMSAuto.software and extract to a folder excluded from Defender.
- Right-click → Run as administrator.
- Windows tab → HWID button.
- Wait ~30 seconds for 'Activation successful'.
- The watermark disappears within 60 seconds; verify in Settings → Activation.
Alternative: KMS activation for Volume editions
- If you're on Enterprise/LTSC, HWID won't work — use the KMS button instead.
- 180-day renewable lease, auto-refreshed by scheduled task.
- Same watermark removal effect.
Temporary fix: Hide the watermark (not recommended)
- This only hides the watermark — Windows remains unlicensed.
- regedit → HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\PaintDesktopVersion = 0
- Reboot. Wallpaper and theme settings will still be locked.
Why the watermark returns
- KMS lease expired (180 days) — re-run KMSAuto.
- Major Windows feature update reset the license — re-run HWID.
- Hardware change (new motherboard) invalidated HWID — re-activate after the change.
Frequently asked questions
▸Why did the watermark appear suddenly?
Most commonly: your KMS lease expired, you reinstalled Windows on different hardware, or a major Windows feature update reset your licensing state.
▸Will removing the watermark unlock Personalization settings?
Only if you actually activate Windows (HWID or KMS). Registry hacks that hide the watermark leave Personalization locked.
▸Is the watermark a virus?
No. It's a built-in Windows notification triggered by Microsoft's licensing service when activation is missing or expired.
▸Does the watermark affect performance?
No. Unactivated Windows runs at full speed with all features except Personalization. The watermark is purely visual.
▸Can Microsoft disable my Windows for using HWID?
No documented case of Microsoft revoking HWID-issued digital licenses. The tickets are byte-identical to genuine free upgrades.
▸Will the watermark come back after a Windows update?
Rarely. Cumulative updates do not affect digital licenses. If it returns after a major feature update, simply re-run HWID once.
